2021 Pro-Life Essay Contest
Junior Division (grades 6-8)
Senior Division (grades 9-12)

Essay Guidelines
  1. Essays must answer the question: “Why are you pro-life?”
  2. Word Limit: Junior Division: 500 words;  Senior Division: 750 words. 
  3. Essays must be double spaced with the pages numbered and printed single side. All text must be 12 pt. font and Times New Roman is preferred.
  4. Cite any sources used.
  5. Please do not include artwork, pictures, or plastic covers.
  6. Participant must be a resident of Johnson County, IA
  7. Include a cover sheet that includes the following: full name, full mailing address, phone number, student’s grade level, school/homeschool, student’s date of birth, parent’s name, parent's email, and word count. Do not include names or any other form of identification on the actual essay. 

Judging will be based on the following criteria: 1. Content and clarity 2. Creativity and originality 3. Grammar, spelling, and organization. We want to communicate the truth that abortion, euthanasia, infanticide, and embryonic stem cell research are unequivocally wrong and take innocent lives, but we want to do so in a manner that will build bridges of communication. Please strive to communicate the truth in a charitable and loving manner. 

Submission Guidelines
  1. Essays should be submitted between Dec. 20, 2020, and May 3, 2021. Essays must be postmarked by May 3, 2021. Entries received after May 3 will not be eligible. Winners will be notified by May 31, 2021
  2. Please mail the essay. Electronic submissions will only be accepted under special circumstances.
  3. Mail to: Johnson County Right to Life, 345 E. College St. Iowa City, IA. 52240
  4. By submitting an entry, the contestant and parent or guardian confirm that the essay is original, but not copyrighted, and agree to allow Johnson County Right to Life to reprint the essay if it wins.
Cash Prizes
  1. Junior Division (grades 6-8)   $200 (1st), $150 (2nd), and $100 (3rd)​
  2. Senior Division (grades 9-12).  $300 (1st), $250 (2nd), and $200 (3rd)

The announcement of winners will be made as soon as possible, but judging time depends on the number of entries received. For more information, please email Sheryl at director@JCRTL.org
