John Paul II Medical Research Institute: Tribute to Our Founder and Research and Staff Updates
From Jay M. Kamath, J.D. / CEO
My Dear Friends: It is with a very heavy heart and profound sorrow that I inform you of the passing of John Paul II Medical Research Institute’s Founder, Dr. Alan B. Moy, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Moy obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Davis and received his medical degree from Creighton University in 1985. He then did his Internal Medicine residency at Saint Louis University and later moved to Iowa City to specialize in Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine at the University of Iowa. After his fellowship, Dr. Moy served as a University of Iowa faculty member from 1994 to 2005 and received his tenure in the Department of Internal Medicine. In 2005, Dr. Moy left his faculty position to establish Cellular Engineering Technologies (CET), a pro-life based biotechnology company created to address embryonic stem cell use in medical research. Seeing that a large segment of the pro-life community was still largely being ignored and impacted by secular medicine, in 2006 Dr. Moy established the John Paul II Medical Research Institute (JP2MRI). As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, JP2MRI became one of the world’s first and possibly the only pro-life medical Institute to both directly advocate for and conduct pioneering research using only adult and induced pluripotent stem cells, when much of the biotechnology and medical community was involved in and promoting the use of embryonic stem cells. During his time overseeing activities at both CET and JP2MRI, Dr. Moy also maintained a private practice in Pulmonary Medicine and provided outreach services to underserved areas in eastern Iowa and South Dakota. A devoted Catholic, a loving husband and father, a medical and research pioneer, and a dedicated physician, Dr. Moy will be greatly missed by all who knew him and whom he helped treat over the years. I am pleased to report that Dr. Moy’s efforts and legacy will continue to live on through the important research that continues to be conducted at both Cellular Engineering Technologies, Inc. and John Paul II Medical Research Institute.
